Review: Our half-term break on the Isle of Wight

The Hermitage, Isle of Wight

They say a change is as good as a holiday. But actually, the thing I love most about the holiday is the change. The disruption of our usual routine. The change of scenery. And while it shouldn’t matter where we go for that change, of course, it does matter. So it’s just as well that our half-term break this month was at The Hermitage on the Isle of Wight.

This grand house boasts ten en-suite bedrooms (yes, ten!) so it’s the perfect place to book, if you fancy a multi-family holiday or you want to get the whole extended family together in one place (it’s the kind of place that has Grandma’s 70th birthday written all over it…)

From the moment we arrived at The Hermitage, I could hear laughter echoing through the house. We were there with another family – Molly (who blogs at Mother’s Always Right), Mr W, Frog (5) and their Baby Girl (16 months) and having met up with them on the ferry crossing from Southampton, our five-year-old was already firm friends with Frog by the time we got to the house. While we were being shown around, the pair of them ran off, thick as thieves, to explore. This house was made for endless games of hide and seek.

Review: The Isle of Wight with Blue Chip Holidays

The Hermitage IoW

Have you ever been on holiday and had literally no idea what to expect, only to arrive and have a really delicious feeling of anticipation, as you realise you DID make the right decision? Well, that’s EXACTLY what the first day of our holiday to the Isle of Wight with Blue Chip Holidays was like over half term.

It was the first time the husband had even met Not Another Mummy Blog’s Alison Perry and her family, who we were staying with, so it could all have been a bit of a disaster. Thankfully, we knew within minutes of meeting up on the ferry that this wasn’t going to be the case.

We were staying at the rather grand Hermitage near Ventnor, on the southern tip of the island. Set in remote countryside (it’s the remotest country house on the island, apparently) overlooking breathtaking scenery across the rolling grounds, this ten bedroom house somehow manages to be both cosy, inviting AND luxuriously spacious. It’s perfect for a multiple family holiday where you don’t necessarily want to be in each other’s faces 24 hours a day.
