The Hermitage, St Catherine's Down, Whitwell, Isle of Wight.
An impressive country house situated in an elevated rural position in just over 11 acres.
The Hermitage is a large and impressive looking house with extensive grounds making it a private and secluded holiday home. Our group consisted of three families with grown-up (20-something) kids – 12 people in all. There are so many bedrooms so everyone could spread out (good for those with partners that snore!). The kitchen is well-equipped for eating ‘in’ and we used the kitchen table for dining, which seemed cozier than the huge stately table in the drawing room which seats 20. The games room, gym and snug was a big hit with the lads, while the older adults all found their own quiet place for reading. We all enjoyed exploring the grounds, though the boundaries are not clearly defined, and there were plenty of sightings of red squirrels. We also enjoyed the quiet location – it is approached by a long private bumpy road and the nearest shop is about 7 mins by car or about a 1.5 miles (3 miles round trip) walk along the bridal path and fields – which we liked, but the isolation may not be for everyone. Ventnor is about 17 mins by car and there are plenty of places to eat and some very good take-aways. The house was clean and spacious, the bedrooms large with basic furniture and all had en-suites. The shower water pressure wasn’t good but there was always hot water available, which we have found to be a problem in previous holiday homes when several showers are in use. The Property Managers were welcoming and helpful and we appreciated the welcome basket with bread after our journey.
We have had the most wonderful week staying in this beautiful house. We were greated by Lee who gave us all the information we could require and went above and beyond in letting us know if we needed anything to contact him. The house is immaculate and the grounds stunning. We explored the woodlands, went for walks, BBQ’d and played games in a warm fully equipped wonderful home. Thank you
We have had a great week’s stay at the Hermitage. Plenty of indoor and outdoor space for the children in a lovely location to explore by foot. The house was great and well equipped. Couldn’t ask for anything more. Even the weather was good! We’ll be back. Thank you.

What a super holiday home. We have holidayed as a family for a lot of years and this definitely ‘up there’ as one of the best. Lot’s of rooms and space so everyone can do their own thing, but also a social house too. Red squirrels a real treat, the pheasants and rabbits on the lawn. Overall a fabulous house and one we would high recommend to anyone. Thank you
We had a wonderful week at the Hermitage. The house managers were extremely helpful and accommodating. There was everything in the house from washing up liquid to potties and changing mats. We loved watching the badgers in the evenings. One down side is the large pond in the front garden (where the children’s play area is) and getting to the paddock for playing games was not easy, but other than that, a lovely property in a lovely part of the world.
Having recently returned from a week in the Hermitage during the half term break, I can honestly say it was the perfect accommodation for us in every way. On arrival, we were all blown away by the beauty of the grounds and house itself and it was in a very secluded, therefore safe location. We were met by the Property Manager (Suzanne) who took the time to show us around the house and everything was in pristine condition. Being a group of 19 (10 adults and 9 children – ranging from 2 to 8 years old) we are always nervous about how a holiday home would cater for our needs and accommodate so many of us under one roof, but we were all blown away by the sheer size of the house and there was ample room for all of us… and then some. The sleeping quarters were fantastic, extremely clean, spacious (especially the 4 “Master” bedrooms) and tastefully decorated, with all rooms having en-suite facilities. There were travel cots and beds available making it easy to juggle the room configurations when the inevitable happened on the first night with the older children ending up in one room together! The en-suite bathrooms were all clean, modern and well stocked. What really made our stay perfect however, was the living quarters downstairs. The Kitchen was large and spacious with casual dining for the children’s dinner time and ideal for family breakfasts together.
The formal dining room across the hall provided a great setting for the adult meals and, like the rest of the house, was beautifully presented and wanted for nothing. The garden provided a very safe and enjoyable environment for the kids and they were out there playing practically every minute that we were home. That said, the grounds are quite large so you do have to be vigilant keeping an eye on the little ones. The games room was well-stocked and provided us with the dream “Man Cave” to escape to, to enjoy Table Tennis, Pool and board games galore. There was also a large variety of outdoor games to play on the lawn with, so The Hermitage had thought of everything. As if this was not enough, there was also an additional play room for the younger children and a quiet TV room for the adults to find a few minutes of peace. It was only a 10-minute drive to nearby Ventnor, where there is a beach and a good selection of pubs and restaurants. We also recommend Blackgang Chine theme park which is again only 10 minutes away, The Wight Mouse Inn for it’s great food and outdoor play area, Steephill Cove for some of the best seafood around and finally Coasteering in Freshwater Bay for those more adventurous. All in all, I would not hesitate to recommend The Hermitage to anyone and will definitely be returning again as I think we will struggle to find a holiday home that ticks so many boxes for our needs. Well done and thank you again for providing the setting for such a wonderful holiday
From the first, jaw-dropping moment we drove up the driveway until the heavy-hearted return journey on the last day of our stay, the Hermitage has truly ticked al the boxes. Beautiful inside and out and with plenty of space to have 9 children bouncing of the walls in one room and parents quietly reading a paper in another. We feel very lucky to have found such a wonderful holiday home and hope to return soon.
One of the most beautiful country houses we have ever stayed at. Rooms all very clean & comfort. Amazing equipped kitchen, thank you.
What a great place. Wildlife galore, friendly badgers – they love bananas!
A perfect mansion when families can get together for a wonderful time in beautiful & grand surroundings.
